Cure Hospital Donates Equipment and Training to Improve Healhcare for Afghans
March 18, 2025Sailo is 35-year-old women from the mountainous district of Spin Boldak, located in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan. Married at the age of 13, she became pregnant by the age of 14. During the following two years Sailo had two C-section deliveries and gave birth to stillborn babies. In her third delivery, which was normal, she gave birth to twins. Sailo’s fourth delivery was a C-section that resulted in the birth of a stillborn and complications that caused her to develop an obstetric fistula.
Sailo lived with this condition for 13 years and suffered from continuous body pain, fatigue, depression, disappointment and more. She said, “I was ashamed of my defect, stinky body, and stains of my clothes. So, I always tried to hide them and avoid my society, family, and even my husband”. Through her tears she continued, “At the beginning my husband’s behavior was fine with me, but with the passage of time it has changed, and recently he got married and obtained a new wife in exchange for our 13-year-old daughter, where he put her in the marriage of an old man.”
Sailo continued, “Other patients from our village who were suffering from the same condition had gone to many medical facilities, even to neighboring countries, to cure their problems, but unfortunately, I could not economically afford to bear the costs.” Ultimately, a former fistula patient who successfully overcame her condition informed Sailo about Cure Hospital and its efforts in fistula repairs. Subsequently, Sailo was enrolled in the fistula program and scheduled for surgery. Under the skilled supervision of Dr. Atia Sharif Nadi and her Fistula Team at Cure Hospital, a successful operation was performed, and the doctors observed daily positive changes in Sailo’s condition, leading to her complete recovery.
While the sadness of her past still lingers, Sailo is now living a happy and normal life, enjoying spending time with her children and mother. She is grateful for the restoration of good health and continues to express her appreciation and respect for the team at Cure Hospital.
